The Sounds of Walking

The Sounds of Walking @ www.sweetbriardreams.blogspot.co.uk

Every evening when I come home from work, little Tia makes a fuss and then looks at her lead.  Not to go on a quick walk around the village, oh no that would be so easy for me, instead she loves to get in the car, look out of the back window and wait for the dodging of the pot holes just off a road that leads onto the Brown Fen.  Her lead comes off and she boldly walks down the track to say 'I'm here', 'I'm off lead', 'I'm safe and happy'.  She walks ahead and stops occasionally to smell the air and to see how high the wheat has grown in a day.

The track is long but straight.  Perfect for a deaf dog that will look back to make sure she is doing right.

The Sounds of Walking @ www.sweetbriardreams.blogspot.co.uk

As we walk, I think about what she is missing and how we take the sense of hearing for granted.  The track we use starts with a fine gravel, then a courser gravel which is a little uncomfortable, then an easier grass pathway.  The echoes of our footsteps change with each surface.  Sometimes sounding like a group of people marching then the softer sound of grass brushing against legs the higher it grows (and nettles... ouch!).  In the background a faint tinkle of a collar and tag telling us Tia is still with us.

The Sounds of Walking @ www.sweetbriardreams.blogspot.co.uk

Tia follows behind on the soles of our shoes, stopping occasionally to look over the bank or sniff at the ground.  We go on ahead, turning occasionally to make sure she is safe, then her head looks up and she runs to us like an old lost friend.

The Sounds of Walking @ www.sweetbriardreams.blogspot.co.uk

How we would love her to hear the wind hissing through the wheat like a snake warning us of its presence.

The Sounds of Walking @ www.sweetbriardreams.blogspot.co.uk

The distant traffic up on the bank with its distant engine noise passing the colourful cottages (love, love, love the pink bus!).

The tall maze with its dark sunless roots reaching up for the best light, beckoning us to get lost amongst its stalks and tapping against each other.  This can be a problem with a deaf dog so eyes are on her constantly here!

The Sounds of Walking @ www.sweetbriardreams.blogspot.co.uk

At the end of the straight walk, little Tia waits for us as she knows she now knows she needs to go on her lead.  The reason?  This beautiful sight is our reward...

The River Welland flows beneath us with no barrier, meaning dogs love to run down the walk, up the bank and splash straight in the river!  Tia watches, but hasn't yet learned the habits of others, thank goodness as I don't fancy fishing her out of here!  The wind turbines turn in the distance, the water laps against the bank and the sheep baa their way through the stillness of the day.

The Sounds of Walking @ www.sweetbriardreams.blogspot.co.uk

The river is still today and so calming.  The silence of the water is comforting and we sit by the bank watching the wildlife, and Tia as she explores in her silent world.

As we sit in the grass planning a picnic in the future on this spot, we appreciate the little things around us such as the wildflowers looking as though they are shedding their fur, just like Tia!

The Sounds of Walking @ www.sweetbriardreams.blogspot.co.uk

And of course, I do love old wood, and seeing this piece against the bright blue of the river made me smile.  What its purpose is, I have no idea, but it is beautiful in its own right.

This walk is a little further on from our sadly missed Coco's favourite walk and Tia has claimed this in her own right and where she feels safe and secure.  She has even got used to the other dogs she sees each evening and meets them as a regular friend.

The Sounds of Walking @ www.sweetbriardreams.blogspot.co.uk

We pass the musical gate to go back down the walk.  This gate looks so innocent but with the wind blowing, it performs its lonely forlorn little tune through the metal bars.  So eerie but comforting.

The Sounds of Walking @ www.sweetbriardreams.blogspot.co.uk

In the distance the faint hum of harvest can be heard.  Tia carries on walking, sniffing and watching things that catch her eye.  We just smile at the hum knowing that the thunder flies (or as I have been saying 'thunder thighs' and getting some weird looks!) will soon be gone.

This sound on our walk gave me the most pleasure as this means that it will be safe to open our windows again without the horrid flies from the corn coming in through the windows and doors and then behind screens and picture frames.  Awful things!

Of course, Mr Badger came with us too as our guest from Pom Pom's Ponderings.  Bringing him down to earth after his trip to Downton Abbey!

A simple walk, with simple sounds.  And when home, the sound of Tia's sweet snores as she cozies up to Mr Teen for cuddles and dreams of her adventures on her walks.

Tia the Cavalier Angel @ www.sweetbriardreams.blogspot.co.uk

All together now... AWWWWW.

For those who haven't seen Tia before she is a rescue dog and we have been blessed with her for about two months now.  If you would like to follow along with Tia's walks and little misadventures as she gets used to her new life, just go along and 'like' on her Facebook page which is in my sidebar or here for more 'awwww' photos!

Thank you so much for your comments on Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) and on my post on the Walnut Cake.  You are all so kind.  I've noticed that there were quite a few 'No Reply Bloggers' which is a shame as I can't get back to you, so I will say thank you so much here.

Have a fantastic weekend.

  2. Lovely post. I used to have a little dog very like Tia over half a century ago, the face especially had the same look. The other day I did the very foolish thing of walking with my MP3 player rattling in my ears, however when I eventually decided this was not a good idea I was suddenly aware of all the sounds around me.

  3. Hey Chel,
Very wonderful pictures. Great to see these wheatfields.
Shots 6 and 16 are very wonderful. And what a funny shot of the lovely weary dog on 19.

Many greetings and have a good weekend,
    Marco

  4. Oh Chel...visiting your blog today was such a delightful treat! I felt as if I was with you and dear little Tia on your lovely walk...you described the sights and sounds so beautifully! How strange it must be to live in a silent world like Tia does...I couldn't imagine life without hearing...I would be so lost! And what a gorgeous doggy she is too! 'Aawww!' Indeed! So glad she has settled in nicely...smiles...
Wishing you a wonderful weekend, dear Chel!
    Blessings and hugs!

  6. What a wonderful walk, your descriptive narrative was beautiful. I can't imagine life with no hearing it must be hard, but she is blessed in so many other ways. Have a great weekend.

  9. What a wonderful place to walk. Love your words and traveling the gravel path with you. Tia is so blessed to have such a good home now. (We do rescues and have a furever dog here.) I am so happy that you have taken in a deaf baby. You know, my oldest son is deaf...and there are things you have to do a tad bit different with someone who cannot hear. Where you take Tia is so full of smells and sights just for her, its no wonder she is ready to go when get home. I would be waiting for that walk, too. She is just beautiful. Enjoy her.

  10. Beautiful photos! It almost felt like we were walking with you in the fields.
Tia is a beautiful dog and she is lucky to have been taken in by you. She looks so sweet. She might not be able to hear all the sounds but I'm sure she can hear the sound of your love for her.
Take good care of yourself and of Tia.

  11. What a wonderful walk you had with Tia and I love that pink bus too! I once saw a pink telephone booth in London and got totally excited and then I found out it was just the base coat! I got a photo anyway!
Tia seems to be settling in - judging for her blissful expression in that last shot!

  12. Chel,
Tia is precious and I only adopt rescue pets. Your photo essay and heartfelt story made me emotional. Chel our friends had a deaf Boston Terrier, his name was Chip and lived to 14 years. Whenever I was around him I would talk to him as if he understood every word, but of course he didn't. I remember our friends explaining that they sense vibrations of the ground and that guides them.
Tia's walk is filled with beauty, sheep, wildlife and natures smells, the sense of sight and smell is keenly developed.
I applaud you for adopting a pet who requires extra care and love.
    xoxo,
    Vera

  13. Just love it. she is so blessed to be with you and have some peace and hope given to her.

  14. Lovely to see how settled Tia is now and that she is relaxed and having fun. With one sense lessened, her other senses will be heightened and, as Vera says, she'll also be able to pick up on vibrations from the ground. She's a little sweetie xx

  15. It seems like Tia uses all of her other senses very well to enjoy her surroundings and her walks. She seems to have fit so well into your family, Chel, and I'm glad you are finding joy in a pooch again! Hugs to you and Tia from Casey and I!!

  18. Gosh, I felt like I was there too. How beautiful. We have similar scenes in our little farming community. There's a lot of corn grown in SE Georgia but there's also cotton, tobacco, and peanuts. I think fields of corn are my favorite.
Tia looks so happy. She is a cutie. Y'all have done a wonderful thing rescuing her. God bless you for that.
Hope your day is blessed and safe. ~:)

  20. Tia is just so adorable. I ws not aware that she had a "hearing" problem - Must have missed that post. It's good you have safe places to take her. I enjoyed your wonderful photos very much.

  21. My Scout can't hear anymore either, but he still enjoys life to the fullest just like Tia is doing on those walks.

  26. I imagine that Tia's other senses are heightened by her lack of hearing so perhaps that is why she likes this walk because there are so many things for her other senses to experience. It looks like a lovely walk for any person or dog! Hope that Mr Badger is enjoying it too! xx

  28. Last photo of Tia is so adorable. You can see on everything she is enjoying her happy life with you. These dog walks along public footpaths where dogs can go off leash are wonderful in your country.

  31. What an incredible place to walk! Tia is so pretty, she is just like Lady. I love the photos of the wheat. We grew some millet this summer, unintentionally. It seeded itself in the yard from some birdseed that fell from the birdfeeder; we noticed it growing and decided to see what it would do. Then the birds ate it! We barely had a chance to look at it. I hope you're having a good weekend, Chel.

  32. Such an engaging post...your beautiful pictures transport me to England (which I'd love to visit) and your narrative is engaging.

I've always had issues letting our pups off leash. Some have just run and run and don't heed commands. My Milo stays on our property most times unless he sees another dog and then he's off like a gunshot. I worry he will be hit by a car. My son never leashed his Golden Retriever and that dog never wanders ten feet from anyone!

Anyway---you are having a ball with your new 'baby' and I'm glad about that.

Thank you for your sweet, sweet comments in my last post---they mean more than you know.

  37. It always amazes me how much England can look like my home state of Kentucky. In photos sometimes it would be really hard to tell if it were England or KY. I always thought that might be why so many English and Scotch people immigrated to KY. We have the KY derby and many other things that are very related to English tradition and then have developed a few of our own! haha

  39. Chel, what a little beauty. I am so happy to meet her and will like reading about her on FB. They say that dogs adjust pretty easily to their trials and it is only we humans that make more of it than is necessary. One thing is pretty apparent that she has a happy home now and will be forever safe there..Happy Wednesday..Judy

  40. Tia is just precious. I'm so glad you got a rescue doggy. There's so many animals in shelters that need good homes. I hadn't seen your last post about the cake so I just went and looked at it. Oh my goodness! That cake is beautiful. I bet it tasted heavenly, too!

  41. Chel, I honestly wish I could get in my car and drive to such a marvelous place as well. It's such a shame that we haven't been able to meet yet and have a cuppa together, but we will. I didn't know that you had a dog that was deaf, bless the heart of that doggy xxxxxx I am a serious dog lover to start with and it's just so heart warming knowing you have adopted a dog that needs special love. Much love to you and I hope you have a great upcoming weekend! Tammy x
