Advent Calendar Door 17 - Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire

December 17th

My seventeenth Advent calendar door has now opened revealing an old photo from last year's Christmas Fayre at Peterborough Cathedral.  It still makes me chuckle to see the bag of chestnuts having a crafty cigarette!.  I love the smell of chestnuts and they remind me of the happy memories of Oxford Street in London each year at Christmas.  The moment of walking up the stairs from the London Underground to join the throng of the Christmas shoppers and smelling that warming aroma and the shouts of 'Hot Chestnuts'.  So good to eat and so good as hand warmers!  Happy, happy memories that rise to the surface at this time of year.

Enjoy your day... how are the lists going?

  1. Hi Chel, yes chestnuts do remind me of my sweet father in law who passed away and how he loved making chestnuts during the holidays. They do bring back sweet memories. It must be so nice during the holidays in London and I miss it. Take care, Julie

  2. We watched the old Christmas Carol movie tonight and he buys chestnuts on his way home and has the man pour them into his pockets. How funny! Sweet hugs!

  3. I've never had roasted chestnuts, but I do love that song! I think that would be wonderful to be greeted by the scent of them while shopping for Christmas in your lovely London town. Hope you are enjoying this beautiful season. Hugs xo Karen

  6. My list has now been set aside and I'm just enjoying the last week as we move toward the Holy day. I miss the smell of chestnuts and candied almonds that I loved so much in the markets in Germany.

  7. Mmmm, chestnuts. I love them with sprouts on Christmas day. My lists are doing ok, all prezzies bought but not yet wrapped, (sigh) it'll be a mad dash on Christmas Eve again.
